The end of the traditional wedding invite?

By Ourbigdayinfo.com Saturday 14 December 2013

With the rise in popularity of the internet, could the traditional wedding invite could be facing a dramatic rapid decline, if anything possible extinction? At ourbigdayinfo.com we see both sides of the coin.

They've been around for quite a long time. Hundreds of years in fact. However would the paper wedding invitation become a thing of the past in an ever focused technology age?

The average price for wedding invites is ... well lets go straight to the horse's mouth, and look at some quotes from a recent thread on a forum on that subject:

"We're paying €285 for 150 invites"

"I did feel 500 was very dear - price of one of our honeymoon flights!"

So yes, wedding invitations don't come cheap. And when wedding budgets are even tighter than ever, couples-to-be are looking for cost saving measures in all areas of their wedding planning.

Speaking form my own experience, we skipped ordering invites and opted for a wedding website. We then simply emailed out the URL (website address) to our guests, and included the 'You are cordially invited' text at the top of wedding website - as a welcome. Yes, there was still a cost for the website itself, however the saving, when compared to going the traditional paper invite route - was huge. Our wedding website cost €50, and we had priced invites at €150. Besides, there was so much more info we could get into a wedding website, than we ever could squeeze onto a paper invite.

In addition to the obvious cost saving, having a wedding website also does your bit for the environment. With less of a need for using paper invites, a few trees will be saved by avoiding using paper.

But for those who are against the idea of throwing the away the paper wedding invite, we at ourbigdayinfo.com still believe it may hold a purpose. And that purpose is a complimentary one. Should a couple like to have both wedding website AND use paper wedding invitations, the paper invite, in addition to its general purpose of inviting, serves a secondary purpose of directing the guest to the wedding website itself - for those who want that bit more wedding info.

We leave the decision to you!
