How to give travelling directions on your wedding website

Okay, some of us are better than others at giving them, however the importance of travelling directions can't be underestimated, especially when it comes to wedding websites. The last thing any bride or groom wants on the day of their wedding, is a guest getting lost. Thankfully, with proper use of your wedding website, this mishap is easily avoidable.

So what makes for good directions on your wedding website? Of course it is difficult to get away from a map itself. With Google Maps, anyone can easily create a directional map from one location to another. However, it's not quite that simple. With guests travelling from all corners of the country, it's unlikely that a one-map-fits-all solution will work. So how does any couple get round this issue? It depends on 3 main factors:

- Where the ceremony/reception is to be held
- Where the bride's guests will travel from
- Where the groom's guests will travel from

Let's look at a typical wedding scenario and use Ireland as the example location.

Mary from Wicklow is to marry John from Dundalk, Ireland. They have settled on having their ceremony and wedding reception in Dublin - strategically picked as it is (more or less) the half way point for both sets of guests to travel to. So, with this scenario one map will not work. Two map links are needed. One for Mary's guests (travelling from Wicklow to Dublin) and one for John's side (travelling from Dundalk to Dublin). So Mary and John insert 2 map links into their 'Directions' section on their wedding website.

But are two maps links sitting in isolation within your 'Drections' section all you need? Whilst this would work, we recommend fleshing it out a bit. Whilst maps can help greatly, there may be local landmarks and signs which are equally helpful for pointing guests in the right direction. Here is example of the finished directions section for Mary and John's wedding website. It shows a combination of map links along with additional supporting text:

We've put together some travelling directions for guests travelling from both the north and the south. Please take a look before the wedding day itself. If you have any queries on travel, please get in touch with us via the contact section.

Ceremony location:

Travelling from Wicklow:

Tips:

On the R107 you will pass Jimmy's bike shop on the left hand side of the road. There isn't too far to travel from this point - the church is a few kilometres on the left. On entering Malahide town itself, look out for the word 'Slow' on the road as the Church is 100 yards on the left after this.

But aren't the map links quite long and messy? Yes, but we will shorten them when we code your wedding website. So your actual wedding website will a lot neater. Here is an example:

To conclude, map links are very useful for wedding guests. They provide a way for your guests to view their directions before embarking on the journey itself. If you are providing additional text to support your maps, keep it short and to the point. Guests do not want to read paragraphs of supporting text for directions. Your text should just flag up a few local landmarks, like the example above.
